5 Ways to Go Around Phuket as Solo Traveler

Phuket, Thailand, is known to be an incredibly safe country, so traveling there solo is a definite must! Whether it’s for a business trip, soul searching, or simple sight-seeing, traveling solo to Phuket is a wonderful adventure to experience. There are numerous benefits to traveling alone, from the more flexible schedule to the shorter preparation times to get ready, or even to the expenses in booking a room and transport.

While Phuket is a safe and generally trusted environment for tourists, knowing a bit about where you’re going can be a big help in preparing you mentally for your trip. One factor that could easily get a load out of your mind would be to know what your mode of transportation around the country would be. To help you in this regard, we have compiled some modes of transportation that would be perfect for the average solo traveler in Phuket.

Tuk Tuk

One of Thailand’s signature modes of transport, the Tuk Tuk is one of the most common and versatile modes of transport available. Unlike those of Bangkok, however, Phuket’s Tuk Tuk is a four-wheeled truck. Available at almost any time of the day, the Tuk Tuk can take you almost anywhere—although it can become highly expensive if taken and chartered alone.

Grab Taxi

Highly convenient and accessible, getting transport via the Grab application on a smartphone is becoming widely popular. While it still can be quite expensive, the beauty of booking a taxi from Grab is that you can view the price of your ride before you book it. It’s highly secure and safe from tourist scamming, so this is a highly valid option for getting around safely. Be aware, however, that Grab taxis can’t pick you up from Phuket Airport, so don’t count on this method if you’ve just arrived.

Phuket Smart Bus

The Phuket smart bus is probably the most cost-efficient way to travel around. It fits multiple passengers at a time and travels along a specific route, so versatility and direct drops are out of the question here. The biggest issue with this is probably the long waiting times, as they can be quite strict with the departure and arrival times. Many people trying to save money still prefer this mode of transport, as it has air-con, is cheap, and is more often than not, on-time.

Motorbike Taxis

Motorbike taxis are pretty quick, extremely cheap modes of transportation, but of course, it carries the danger of being on a motorcycle. This mode of transport can cut through traffic easily, and the drivers know the best and easiest ways to get to your destination. The biggest issue with this, however, is that it is only available in select areas—Phuket Town, Patong, Kata, and Karon, probably to say some.

Motorcycle Rental

If you’re a bit of a daredevil, then you can rent your own motorcycle to have a better grasp of your transportation. Be aware, however, that to do so, you must have your international driving license. Driving without this leads to a fine, so be careful.

Conclusion

Traveling around Phuket alone offers a wide range of possible transport to choose from—from Tuk Tuks to renting your own motorbike. While it is quite safe and enjoyable to travel alone, it is always best to exercise a modicum of caution when transacting and speaking with locals. Always be sensible and don’t push the boundaries of safety simply because Phuket boasts of being.
